Previous Entry  Add to memories!  Tell a Friend  Next Entry
Twitter
I don't have a Twitter account, because the whole idea seems incredibly dull to me and reading "Tweets" is seldom anything but irritating.

However, I DO have this LJ account, because reading other people's journal entries and seeing their photos etc. interests me and keeps me coming back for more.

I hate getting rid of LJ friends but I will no longer subscribe to journals that are essentially uncut Twittering. I'm sorry if that means you and I are parting company. I could just filter my Friends page but that'd be fake.

I used to enjoy LJ and Twitter has been spoiling that for too long.

I fully agree; I enjoy posts with some depth, and Twittering (or updating Facebook status) gets people's need to post out of the way without getting substance into other people's heads.

I deleted a bunch of twitterers off my flist, including foxsyd, even though she was a great RL friend, because fuck, man!

I do twitter. But twitter is twitter and LJ is LJ and it's just shit to make LJ people read twitter. If you want to read twitter, you'd be reading twitter, right?

I adopted this strategy about 3 months ago, but unlike you, I wasn't polite enough to announce my intentions. I cut three friends *like that* and never felt badly about it. It really cleaned up my Friends page but even more beneficial was that I wasn't irritated each time I opened LJ. The streaming tweets really bugged me. "People think I'm interested in reading *that*?" No, sorry.

I wasn't polite enough either...I'd already cut some people when I posted. It wasn't a threat to bully them into changing, it was an explanation.

What I find really annoying about Twitter posts that get forwarded to LJ is that they're late. Even in the even that they might have been interesting at the time, they would only have been of immediate interest, so when they turn up as a daily digest, 24 hours after the event in question has been over - well, why bother? I then reply to them as if they were current (knowing perfectly well that they're not) in the vain hope of making the point.

I don't feel strongly enough about it to actually drop people, but I agree that I find them completely irritating. I have a Facebook but would never dream of linking the mundanity of it to LJ. Seriously, WTF?

I linked my Twitter to my Facebook as a sort of protest that FB changed to look so much like Twitter. Seemed appropriate at the time and besides, my FB updates are rarely longer than 140 characters.

But linking Twitter to LJ? Not in my life. Never. Ever. I might understand if people wanted their Twits (*ahem*) to be searchable by date, but otherwise it's completely pointless and very annoying.

Looks like LJ has done away with (or hidden really, really well) the feature to "backdate" entries, where it doesn't show up on others' friends pages. If I could find it, I'd add that to my twitter-posts, so I'd be able to see them in a timeline with the rest of my entries without annoying my friends.

Backdating is still there. Click the "Edit" link next to the date line, then check the box that says "Date out of order".

Excellent, thank you. Now, does anyone know if there's a way to inject a tag for that option when posting by email, as loudtwitter does?

I've pawed through the Mobile Post settings and FAQs and it does not appear that you can specify the date/time to post in mobile posts.

http://www.livejournal.com/manage/emailpost.bml?mode=help

You may wish to suggest that the "date out of order" option be added for mobile posts - information on doing so is here: http://www.livejournal.com/support/faqbrowse.bml?faqid=164

(I used to do LJ Support. Does it show?)

If you use Firefox, the Greasemonkey extension plus the script LJ Twitterless gets rid of 95% of the problem by removing any post shipped from loudtwitter.

Plus greasemonkey is useful in it's own right, anyway.

Okay, I just added Greasemonkey. Now tell me how to do the script thing.

(Reply to this) (Parent)(Thread)

[info]badnoodles

The script is found here: http://userscripts.org/scripts/show/17139

Once you have it installed, test it on your frineds page. If you are lucky, it will work right out of the box. If it doesn't, or crashes your friends' page layout, don't worry - it just means you have to modify the script based on what your LJ style is.

Open up Greasemonkey, click on LJ Twitterless in the script list, and click the "Edit" box. You'll see a text file holding the actual script that makes it run.

About 15 lines down, is a line that says "var branchesUp = " and a number. You will need to change that number. I suggest starting at 1 and moving upwards until the twitter posts are gone.

I also highly recommend the following scripts in general:
"Disable Text Ads" @ http://userscripts.org/scripts/show/3637
"Expand All" @ http://userscripts.org/scripts/show/27128
"Troll Bridgs" @ http://userscripts.org/scripts/show/7544

Rock. It seems to have worked, except there are two people who LJ-cut their twits that it doesn't seem to have worked on. I've put the number up to 9 and they're still there. It worked on a couple other people who cut their twits - any thoughts?

I've got the same problem, one or two people who thoughtfully put their twits behind a cut. I figure if they are trying to keep me from having to read them, I can just scroll past.

Unless the lj-cuts are also tagged, or marked "shipped by LoudTwitter", I'm not sure that there is a way to selectively nuke lj-cut twits.

Can't say I blame you. I've got a twitter account myself, I do not care to have it shipped anywhere and have already gotten bored with it anyway. It's as pointless as I thought it was, but I gave it a sporting chance.

I pretty much skip right over Twitter entries on LJ now. And sadly a few longtime LJ friends have gone almost entirely to twitter.

I'll stick to LJ and Facebook. And I promise no "Tweets" in my journal :)

I can certainly agree with the frustration... there's a few folks on my list who are not quite 100% twitter all the time, but they are really starting to bug with the number of twitter posts...

Of course, I'm slow to drop folks, because lately all the newcomers I get are Russian Spammers.....

Is LJ even trying to attract new folks to the service in the English Speaking Countries anymore?

I never joined Twitter, Facebook or Myspace. They didn't offer the the kind of contact that a hermit like me is looking for. I decided instead to start my own communities that catered to my desire for solitude. They are called Twatter, Arsebook and MicePace, the latter dedicated to the discussion and photomacros of cats by restless rodents.
I also made a point of coding them so they cannot be linked because I do not want to be further distracted by the clutter of my own thoughts.
I'm sorry to have to decline requests to join, should anyone wish to, but they are already fully subscribed by me and the mice, and I do not wish them to be a channel for any predatory stray cats seeking simply to groom us as mere playthings, or almost as bad, dinner.

You have a lot of people on your flist so I can see that being an issue if many of them use twitter. I'm personally against me having a twitter account as I can't see the point, but I only have 2 people on my flist that post it to LJ and one of them is using it to keep us posted on her trip, which I'm quite enjoying.

I on the other hand try to keep your flist short by hardly posting anything. lol Darn good thing I do good comment or I wouldn't have any friends. XD

I annoy people when I say that twitter is dumbed down facebook, and facebook is dumbed down LJ.

People who have been making fun of my livejournal acct for YEARS, "Oh GAWD why would you want to share details of your life with strangers?" now are doing facebook memes that are copies of old old lj memes, and now they are starting to twittertweettweet, and you ONLY have to type 140 characters!

I try to make my posts like a ladies dress. Long enough to cover what needs to be covered, but short enough to be interesting.
